Asphalt Crack Repair

Asphalt Crack Repair Reno, Nevada

Compared to concrete paving, asphalt paving is less expensive and faster to install. With the right care, an asphalt pavement can last for 20 years or more without becoming unusable. However, without the right care, the pavement can fail in less than half that time. One of the most critical procedures for asphalt pavements is asphalt crack repair. If you are located in the northern part of Nevada, including the Reno area, Affordable Striping & Sealing can help you give your asphalt pavement the care that it needs.

Why Is Asphalt Crack Repair a Critical Procedure?

In most cases, asphalt cracks react to temperature changes, expanding in hot weather and contracting in cool weather. Cracks can also react to the pressure exerted on the pavement by traffic. As a result of the different forces acting on the pavement, cracks grow longer, wider, and deeper. They can also create potholes, new cracks, or alligator cracking. The only way to stop an active crack from worsening is to have it repaired. If you do not repair cracks in a timely manner, water, vehicle fluids, and dirt can enter through the openings, work their way deep into the structure of your pavement, and cause serious damage throughout.

Are Asphalt Crack Repairs Expensive?

Asphalt crack repairs are usually quite inexpensive, especially when they are performed soon after the crack appears. The longer cracks go unrepaired, the more they can grow, increasing the cost of repair. It is sort of like driving on a flat tire. The longer you drive on it, the more likely it is that you will destroy the tire completely as well as damage the rim.

Why Does an Asphalt Pavement Develop Cracks?

There is no single reason that covers all types of cracks in all asphalt pavements. However, most cracks are the result of one or more of the following.

  1. The paving contractor did not install the pavement correctly. This category could encompass inferior materials, improper compaction, errors involving the construction of the base, or improper design. Although exceptions are possible, most cracks that are caused by installation errors will begin to show up quickly, usually within two years or so.
  2. The pavement has been overloaded. Contractors design asphalt pavements to support certain weights and certain volumes. Increasing either the number or weights of vehicles can stress the pavement beyond its ability to flex and rebound. Cracks caused by overloading can develop at any point in the pavement’s life.
  3. One of the most common causes of cracks in asphalt pavements is the sun. Ultraviolet radiation will turn unprotected asphalt pavements dry and brittle, and dry, brittle asphalt pavements are more likely to crack. Cracks caused by UV rays usually start to develop after seven years or so of being exposed to sunlight without the protection of sealcoating.
